Ren donned the helmet after renouncing his family and Jedi heritage to join the Knights of Ren, a group of masked marauders from the Unknown Regions of the galaxy. The helmet marked Ren's status in their ranks, while also serving to inspire fear in the tradition of his grandfather, the Sith Lord Darth Vader, who also wore a mask.
